Michael Stankowski was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He began studying the guitar at the age of nine.
In high school he played percussion in the school’s concert band and guitar in the jazz band, in addition to performing around Saskatchewan in a rock band that he formed with some classmates. After high school he continued performing and recording with a variety of bands while studying at the University of Saskatchewan and teaching at the Saskatoon Academy of Music. Upon completing a degree in psychology, he began studying music and education at the University, where he played in the concert band and the jazz band, and occasionally sang with the choir. In addition to being a member of the Marc Holt Quintet, he currently plays in a Celtic-influenced folk-rock band called A Dram Too Few, and works off-and-on with a number of different local acts playing guitar, bass, harmonica and percussion. When not performing or teaching music, his hobbies include singing, learning the violin, and reading.
